Enjoy free public transport services in Malta using Tallinja Card

Hello! Everyone, what if I tell you that Public Transport in Malta is free, not only in Malta but  to Gozo & Comino too. Isn’t it exciting? Yes, it is true. Let me tell you in detail about this wonderful service by Malta Government.

The Malta Public Transport Department offers Tallinja card which is a personalised public transport card used in Malta. It gives you access to free travel on Malta’s Bus network, Valletta Ferry services covering the entire country. Whether you are a student or a resident, getting a Tallinja Card is a very smart move.

There are different types of cards depending on your residency status, age and needs-

  • Adult Card – For residents aged 17–59
  • Child Card – For children aged 4–10
  • Student Card – For full-time students aged 11+
  • Gozo Card – For Gozitan residents
  • Senior Card – For residents aged 60+
  • Concession Card – For persons with disabilities
  • Explore Cards – For tourists (7 days travel pass, not personalised)

How to Apply for the Tallinja Card

Step 1: Fill in the online application

Go to https://www.publictransport.com.mt/register-now and start filling up the details.

  • Your Personal Details (name, date of birth, e-mail, phone no.)
  • Choose the type of card you want.
  • Proof of Identity (Maltese ID or passport)
  • Details of your residence address in Malta
  • Upload documents (passport size photo and ID or passport copy)

Step 2: Pay the Application Fee

You need to pay only the one-time application fee (non-refundable) depending on your type of card which can be paid online securely.

  • Child Tallinja Card:   €5 application fee.
  • Student Tallinja Card:  €25 application fee.
  • Adult Tallinja Card:   €25 application fee.
  • Gozo Resident Tallinja Card:  €25 application fee.
  • Senior Tallinja Card€5 application fee.
  • Concession Tallinja Card:  €5 application fee.
  • Explore Tallinja Card- €25 application fee.

Step 3 – Wait for delivery

After submission, your personalised card will be delivered on your provided address within 10-15 working days.

Using your Tallinja Card

Once you receive your card, simply tap it on the card reader when boarding the bus on the machine that is closest to the driver (easy-peasy). You can also link your card to the Tallinja app (must have) where you can track bus arrivals in real-time allowing commuters to plan their journey ahead of time, manage your account and view travel history.

Tips and Warning

  • Always carry your Tallinja card with you as the inspectors carry out random inspections on the buses each day in order to check that all passengers have tapped their Tallinja Card or purchased a cash ticket. If you do not tap the card on the machine inside the bus, you will be fined €50 and your Tallinja Card will be confiscated until you pay your fine.
  • Do not use someone else’s card, its illegal.
  • If your card is lost or damaged, you can request a replacement online for a small fee.
