How moving abroad changes your life unexpectedly

Let’s be real, moving abroad isn’t just about packing your bags, boarding a plane and collecting a stamp on your passport. Its more than that, its about stepping into the new world- new people, new culture, new language, new food (trust me as a vegetarian, it matters) and slowly watching your life transformation. You think, you are just going for study, exploring, new opportunities and maybe for a better social media content but it is much more than that. Spoiler Alert: I also added Malta’s flag in my Insta bio.

When you come out of that bubble of comfort you were living in your whole life, everything feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable. The grocery, the accommodation, the way people cross the street, the way buses stop sign works, everything makes you anxious and overwhelm simultaneously. You will mess up a lot. But guess what? You are here to be independent and you start adapting things without even realizing. Suddenly, Google translate is your best friend and confusion becomes the part of adventure.

You know what is terrifying and incredibly empowering at the same time, you are your own safety net and you don’t trust everyone completely but you trust them enough to share a room. You learn to be on your own like I remember in the beginning when I moved to Malta, I had no sim card and internet connection and it was tough to go out of the home. I went to a hospital alone, just because I missed a single a bus stop, I wandered around for 1 hour on the streets asking for the route from the strangers. In that moment I felt like crying but only said one thing to myself – I chose this and I have to be strong to become independent. These little moments make you realize that you don’t need anyone and realize that these are the days you grow the most.

When homesickness hits: Living abroad forces you to see beyond your cocoon as you meet people with completely different backgrounds, culture, values, perspectives and nationalities. Interaction and conversations with them become eye-opener, you start to question things – best way. You met people of your age who has achieved a lot and you are still figuring out your life. And that’s when homesickness starts to sync as you realize how happy you were in your own little world but there is so much to do and achieve in this life.

Fetching moments not just memories – You will always remember the first friend you made, the stranger who helped you when you got lost, the first job you land. These little moments shape you quiet and powerful ways which you see as a big accomplishment and carry them forever in your heart.

Moving abroad doesn’t just change where you live, but who you are. You come out of your comfort zone, stretching your limits and creating a better version of yourself that you never knew existed.

REMEMBER ALWAYSA larva crawling on leaves and branches of a plant grows into a beautiful ambitious butterfly flying out across the open air, only through “Metamorphosis”. It is tough but if you endure this Metamorphosis, the sky is the limit.
