Industrial visit at Malta Freeport – For Logistics and Supply Chain students

On Jan 26,  PG-Logistics and Supply Chain Management students at Global College Malta visited the Malta Freeport. It was a valuable and informative experience for students where they were briefed on topics such as Port Services and Operations; Port Management and Governance; Shipping and International Law; and Logistics and Supply-Chain Management. Some key points discussed by Freeport authorities are:

  1. Company Set-up and Privatisation:In 1998, Malta Freeport undertook a corporate restructuring program as part of its strategy to consolidate its eminence internationally, then privatized in 2004. It helps the students to get clarity about Freeport Malta.
  2. Mission of Malta Freeport: To lead a transshipment hub in the full realization of Malta’s strategic position in the Mediterranean, thus contributing to the enhancement of the region’s nodal influence in the global trading system while sustaining its leading role in the Mediterranean transshipment trade.
  3. Vision of Malta Freeport Terminals:To focus on operational efficiency, creating a distinctive climate for innovation, and working towards sustaining flexible and reliable quality service from its personnel, the company will ensure that its customers’ expectations will be fulfilled while creating long-term shareholders’ value.
  4. Investment in Transhipment:Freeport has invested heavily in its terminals and is now in an unmatched position to attract new business, having the necessary effective capacity and the right mix of resources to entice other carriers to use its facilities for their transshipment operations. This includes legal requirements, documentation, and other necessary steps.
  5. The Waste Management Plan:Aims to control and regulate waste generation and handling at port facilities. The company is committed to reducing, as much as possible, the amount of waste generated on its premises and aims to reuse, recycle, or recover the waste generated before disposal into landfills.
  6. Legal Aspects of Transhipment:Compliance with legal regulations is fundamental for the smooth operation of Transhipment. Being aware of the legal aspects helps in avoiding potential issues and ensuring the port operates within the legal framework.
  7. GDPR Practices:In the digital age, data protection is a critical concern. Understanding General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) practices is important for ports to handle various data responsibly.
  8. Corporate social responsibility:The Freeport is committed to the progress of the community where it operates, working to conserve the environment and improve health, safety, education, culture, and leisure.
  9. Question and Answer Session:The interactive session allowed students to clarify doubts and gain deeper insights into the topics discussed, providing a more engaging and personalized learning experience.

Overall, the students left this session with a practical understanding of waste management, supply chain management, internal operations, corporate social responsibility, and logistics. Additionally, it assisted the students in learning comprehensive details on Freeport to better prepare them for their module assignments.
